my sister was watching antiques roadshow and saw a painting by ralph cahoon and thought that i would like his work. boy was she right.

Wednesday
string figure.

i love harry smith's experimental films and his extensive collection of american folk music, basically he was an all around genius. which is also evident in these string forms that somehow i had never seen before!

seeing a single magpie is bad luck. to ward off misfortune say this rhyme or greet him with "hello mr. magpie, how is your wife?".

Monday
falling & laughing.
in the new vice there is an interview with edwyn collins, the singer from scottish twee pop band orange juice. in 2005 edwyn suffered two major brain hemorrhages that left him unable to walk, talk, or use his right hand. his brain also lost the ability to work out letters and words. over the next three years he began drawing animals, mostly birds, with his left hand as a way of teaching his body and mind how to work again. he recently had a show of these bird drawings at smithfield gallery in london.

Saturday
james castle.

i went and saw the james castle retrospective at the pma and it was really really wonderful. i couldn't find my most favorite piece online, but he drew people with little rectangle landscapes for heads and it blew my mind. the found cardboard assembleages were also so perfect. really really wonderful.
Thursday
i may not know what i like, but i know art.

i saw this drawing by jim krewson in the new vice magazine and it totally cracks me up. i love it. sometimes art is really stupid.

memorable foam.
"you are hereby invited to contribute to what we hope will be an ongoing project exploring memory and drawing."

the neat people over at memory foam have started up a project that's perfect for people like me and james. they want to see just how good your memory is for those halcyon days of drawing cartoon characters over and over until you get it right. they are starting it off with garfield and the smurfs. the catch is that you can't look at any sort of smurf or garfield reference or likeness of any kind between reading this rule and drawing your contribution!! honor system people! once you send in your memory it will be published on the web site and in the debut issue. pretty cool. entries are due setpember 30th 2008. check out all the info here.
