Monday

crazy to exist.

"the softness and fragility of baby animals caused us the same intense pain."

Wednesday

its own natural form.

hey, remember the collages that i've been making? well i made it into a book! that you can buy!

here's a little preview:

Monday

the social theory of magic.

i've been reading this book for my thesis and it's so amazing {and confusing}. it's full of marvelous sentences such as:

"magic actions are rituals that make or change something. they operate mysteriously and what they create is mostly mystical. they often create an object or change a state, usually by a transfer of a quality or an infusion of a power."

and semi-mindbloggling graphs such as this:

i can feel myself getting more magical by the page! i'd recommend it to anyone who's, you know, interested in the academic, philosophical and psychoanalytical dissection of the history and human understanding of magic.

Wednesday

the library skirt.

i'm loving this skirt created by textile designer extraordinaire heather ross. she made it for an event held at the nypl about designers/crafters gaining inspiration from the library stacks. and boy did she ever. the image is a drawing of a cross section of the library's underground stacks, showing in great detail how an enormous collection of books could be stored, organized, and made easily accessed by all. it even shows the pulley system that was used to carry the books from deep underground! so, so cool.

Thursday

equal parts.

my official thesis sketchbook.

for jerome — with love and squalor.

"what really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. that doesn't happen much, though."

r.i.p. friend.

Tuesday

diversity of life and culture.

"this is a present from a small, distant world, a token of our sounds, our science, our images, our music, our thoughts and our feelings. we are attempting to survive our time so we may live into yours." - jimmy carter

the voyager golden record is so beautiful. if i was an e.t. i would think that earth was pretty great.

Monday

non-required reading.

my sister got me this book and it's great. i mean with an introduction by judy blume, edited by dave eggers and a cover designed by barry mcgee, it's pretty hard to go wrong.

you were in my dream last night.

i've posted about ray fenwick's work before and i have no qualms about doing it again. i love the conversational nature of his illustrations. makes me want to say "who me? yeah? hi! ok!?"

Friday

Tuesday

one size fits none.

chloe sevigny modelling pieces from martin margiela's size74 collection {s/s 2000.} photographs by mark borthwick. i scanned this from a book at school because i love the idea that the clothes are for everyone and for no one.

Sunday

quietly bear pain.

marianne lodge’s practice writing book from 1847. made of real vellum with beautiful calligraphy and a collection of pasted on wax seals. this amazing specimen is from book collector j.p. williams new blog. i love to see into other peoples lives.

Wednesday

start at the beginning.

some good advice from j.d. salinger.

Saturday

tangle of thorns.

over at lolita there is a really cool collection of lolita covers from all over the world. the last one above is the edition that i have!

Wednesday

cessation of all hankerings.

'It is a long-term project, patently an ambitious one, and there is a real-enough danger, I suppose, that sooner or later I'll bog down, perhaps disappear entirely, in my own methods, locutions, and mannerisms. On the whole, though, I'm very hopeful.' -
J.D. Salinger on the Glass family.

Friday

this is so bad it's gone past good & back to bad again.

whitney recently lent me ghost world in an attempt to bring me over to the dark side of reading comic books. it only sort of worked; i liked the book, but it mostly just made me want to watch the movie again. so i did last night and it's still awesome. above is the full clip from gumnaam that enid is watching during the opening credits. i wish that life could be more like that.

Monday

once upon a time...

you've probably seen the videos of capucine posted all over the internet and you have also probably fallen in love with her. thankfully her powers of preciousness are being used for good. edurelief has commissioned capucine {and her mother} to create t-shirts, magnets and buttons to raise money to help built and fill libraries in mongolia. and we all know that capucine loves to share good story.
