Thursday

happy 90210.

here is a fake polaroid of brandon walsh sitting on the beach.

Saturday

dogtooth.

this was the best, weirdest, most intense movie i've seen in a while. recommended for the not-so-faint-of-heart.

Friday

cat card.

two wonderful cat driver's licenses that my friend got me from japan forever ago. they've been on my fridge for years and i finally got around to scanning them.

Thursday

Wednesday

incantation.

i've been trying to come up with one last pattern for my thesis project. one that embodies mystical symbols without being too literal and keeping the design simple and clean. and then i see this. this is what i was seeing in my head. this is the feel that i was trying for. this evokes the magical incantation. and it is called incantation and it was designed by alvin lustig in 1947. it's strange how we can imagine and desire something that we never knew existed.

oh yeah.

i also wanted to show you guys these two important things...

Monday

the social theory of magic.

i've been reading this book for my thesis and it's so amazing {and confusing}. it's full of marvelous sentences such as:

"magic actions are rituals that make or change something. they operate mysteriously and what they create is mostly mystical. they often create an object or change a state, usually by a transfer of a quality or an infusion of a power."

and semi-mindbloggling graphs such as this:

i can feel myself getting more magical by the page! i'd recommend it to anyone who's, you know, interested in the academic, philosophical and psychoanalytical dissection of the history and human understanding of magic.

Sunday

earth girls are easy.

Space Valentine's Day (commonly shortened to Valentine's Day) is an annual space holiday held on February 14 celebrating love and affection between intimate space companions. The holiday is named after one or more early Intergalactic martyrs named "Space Valentine" and was established by Lord Pope Gelasius I in 496,000 QZ. It is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting space flowers, offering space confectionery, and sending space greeting cards.

Monday

talisman.

i think that the people at pantone must be reading my blog, my brain, or stealing my sketchbook at night. either that or i'm a really good forecaster. i'm actually leaning towards the latter. check out their summer 2010 color forecast, talisman:

The talisman is woven or spun magic. It holds light and has special powers. It is complex, mysterious and highly impressive. It transforms by touch and radiates energy. Almost a rainbow, it is a spectrum mixed with precious particles. Each colour has an edge a little out of reach. It is man and woman. Hard to capture, the talisman is forever pursued.

i mean, seriously?! i know that i haven't spoken too much about my thesis here, but i'm designing and printing fabric to create magical garments that both accept and repel tragedy. the colors are a little off from the ones i'm using for my collection; i've got more blues and blacks, but that green is pretty close as is the range of purples. i don't know how i feel about this...

Tuesday

10,000.

today i am ten thousand days old. wtf.

Wednesday

type.

a while ago i saw these canisters at a thrift store and thought that they had the most amazing type. look at the coffee! it still blows my mind. i ended up just taking pictures and not getting them because they didn't have their tops. but then, i kept thinking about them and went back 2 weeks later and they were still there! $1.50 later and they are sitting on my desk full of pens and stickers and sewing supplies.

2 or 3 things.

1) this is a picture that i took with my camera phone on a rainy veterans day morning. i love it.

2) tomorrow is my last day of class until the middle of march. i am both very excited and extremely terrified.

3) that's it.

Friday

have a good weekend!

and don't do anything i wouldn't do!

Saturday

happy halloween.

while i do like fall weather and candy and black cats and carving pumpkins i actually kind of, hate, halloween. this, however, i do like. probably because i like the ghostbusters theme song and hilarious dancing.happy halloween to me!

Friday

Monday

winter-time yeti fun!

this summer designed a whole series of greeting cards that feature two best friend yetis hanging out together. i wanted to use the 'snow-yeti' as my christmas card so i got about a million/billion printed. i only know, like, 15 people so i'm going to sell off the rest! so if you want to say ''seasons greetings'' with two cute monsters please check them out!

Wednesday

saut dans le vide.

yves klein used this photograph as evidence of his ability to undertake unaided lunar travel.

it was published as part of a broadside denouncing NASA's own lunar expeditions as hubris and folly. the final image is a photomontage in which the large tarpaulin klein leaped onto was removed. now that sounds like hubris and folly. whatever, he's still the creator of my favorite color ever.
