i guess this is glow-ing up.

there comes a time in many women's lives where they look in the mirror and say "i am a fancy grown-up lady and i want a designer bag." once you reach that point there's no going back, and that's just what happened to me a few months ago! after that i just had to decide which fancy bag would most define me and what kind of fancy grown-up lady i am. am i a LV speedy? a chanel 2.55? i decided that i was a wang. a wang marion. a GLOW IN THE DARK wang marion, from s/s '13. some of you readers may remember by obsession with glow in the dark items during my grad school days, and well, it never went away! i love that my first (non-vintage-store-score) designer bag says exactly what i want it to say about me; she's cool, classic and futuristic!

i've been gone for a while, huh?! well, i've been busy preparing for my final graduate review this friday. lots of printing and dying and bleaching and crocheting and reading and thinking about magic and horses and the universe. i made these god's eye earrings to wear for my review. they are made of sterling silver, glow-in-the-dark thread and horse hair. they didn't turn out quite the way i was hoping, but i'm considering them prototypes.

they're about 1.5" long, plus the earwire. here i am wearing them [with twenty-twenty doing his best disaffected gucci model stare.]

for the huichol peoples of northwestern mexico, the god's eye is symbolic of the power of seeing and understanding that which is unknown and unknowable, The Mystery. the huichol call their god's eyes sikuli, which means "the power to see and understand things unknown." yes!

the tank top image is based off of this which was a reference for a never-completed tapestry weaving. the back hangs extra long and is made of a poly-silk mesh. the leggings are a silk-lycra blend done in this print and feel amazing. everything was sewn with glow-in-the-dark thread.

6 yards of paper-backed silk, 2 yards of nebula printed canvas, a 1/4 pound of natural white horse hair, 15 feet of glow in the dark rope, and 12 uranium glass buttons.

tanyna aguiñiga is mainly a furniture designer/maker but has also branched out into textiles. she created this scarf that's woven with glow-in-the-dark fibers and looks great for keeping safe and warm on a nighttime bike ride.
